Past Workshops:
Aunty Carolee is the director of Hula Hui O Kapunahala, a Hawaiian Studies Program at the Nuuanu YMCA. This program incorporates hula, ukulele and Hawaiian language and singing for boys and girls ages 3 - 83.
In addition to being a volunteer teacher there for 48 years, Aunty Carolee has also volunteered in the public schools for about 20 years. She also prepares performers for competitions, most recently the Queen Liliuokalani Keiki Hula Competition in July.
Recently, she taught free ukulele lessons every Tuesday and Thursday mornings at ‘Aupuni Place (formerly Na Mea Hawai’i at Ward Warehouse). She taught traditional Hawaiian songs and shared local history, customs and culture.
In February of this year, she was one of the clinicians featured in the annual Hawai’i Music Educators Conference here at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa.
Makanani Sala is a 1999 graduate of the Kamehameha Schools, and received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Hawaiian Studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She has also worked with special education students at August Ahrens Elementary School in Waipahu while she attended UH-Mānoa.
During her graduate work, Makanani taught Hawaiian language at Sacred Hearts Academy. Soon afterward, she began to teach Hawaiian Studies 107 at UH-Mānoa. She is now a Hawaiian Studies (HWST 107) teacher at Windward Community College.
She enjoys hula and has been dancing since she was 3 years old. She is currently the kumu hula of Hula Olapa.
